Kubot advances; Clement exits Nice

05/17/2010 - Nice, France (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Eighth-seeded Pole Lukasz Kubot posted a first-round win, while veteran French favorite Arnaud Clement exited the inaugural Nice Open on Monday.

Kubot handled French wild card Gianni Mina 7-5, 6-4, while the wild card Clement succumbed to German Simon Greul 6-3, 6-4 on the red clay at Nice Tennis Club.

Two other Frenchmen fell on Day 2, as Argentine Leonardo Mayer overcame French qualifier David Guez 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 and Belgian Olivier Rochus routed French qualifier Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-1 at this final French Open tune-up.

Additional wins came for Swiss Marco Chiudinelli and Italian Potito Starace.

The first round will continue here on Tuesday, including matches for fifth- seeded Croat Marcos Baghdatis and French favorites Florent Serra and Richard Gasquet.

The top seed this week is Sweden's Robin Soderling, who stunned the world of tennis last spring at Roland Garros when he upset four-time champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round and went on to lose the title match against Roger Federer.

Soderling and the other three top seeds -- Fernando Verdasco of Spain, France's Gael Monfils and Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci -- all have byes into the second round this week. Soderling will open his stay here against the diminutive Rochus, while Monfils will meet Chiudinelli.
