Kerr gets 12th LPGA win at Michelob Ultra Open

05/10/2009 - Williamsburg, VA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Cristie Kerr shot a one-under 70 on Sunday and squeezed past a tight leaderboard to win the Michelob Ultra Open for the second time.

Kerr, also the 2005 champion, finished at 16-under-par 268 for a two-stroke victory. It was the 12th title of her career and first this season.

Her $330,000 winner's check vaulted her to the top of the money list.

"It means the world," Kerr said of the win, her first since last year's Safeway Classic. "I'm just tickled."

Korea's In-Kyung Kim carded an even-par 71 and finished in second place behind Kerr at 14-under 270.

Australian Lindsey Wright (73), who shared the third-round lead with Kerr, made a bogey on the 18th hole to drop into a tie for third place with Song-Hee Kim (71) at 13-under 271.

Wendy Ward (70) was fifth at 11-under 273 and Shiho Oyama (69) took sixth at 10-under 274.

Lorena Ochoa, who set a 36-hole tournament scoring record, shot her second consecutive 74 and finished nine strokes back at seven-under 277.

With the top of the leaderboard in constant flux throughout the day, it took almost a full round for a clear favorite to emerge.

Kerr made birdies -- and a few pars -- in the all right places.

Of course, she had some help along the way from her competitors.

Kerr broke an early four-way tie for the lead when she tapped in a two-foot birdie putt at No. 4 to move in front by herself at 16-under.

Wright squandered a chance to tie Kerr when she missed a four-foot birdie putt at No. 9, but Kerr paid her back on the next hole.

At the 10th, Kerr knocked her approach to four feet for a good look at birdie, while Wright stuck hers on the far side of the green. After Wright rolled in her long birdie putt, Kerr missed her short try and the players were tied for the lead.

Wright missed another short putt -- this one for par -- at the 13th hole with a chance to move ahead of Kerr. Both players bogeyed the hole, while Song-Hee Kim made birdie ahead at the 14th to forge a three-way tie for the lead at 15- under.

Song-Hee Kim then took the outright lead with a four-foot birdie putt at 15, but she found trouble in the rough at 16 and made a double-bogey, falling out of contention.

Kerr, meanwhile, tapped in a one-foot birdie putt at the 15th to suddenly take a one-stroke lead over Wright at 16-under par.

Wright then bogeyed the 16th, handing Kerr a two-shot advantage she would protect by making pars at her last two holes.

On Saturday, the 31-year-old Kerr stressed the importance of being patient after she went birdie-birdie on her last two holes to earn a share of the overnight lead.

It was patience she needed most on Sunday with so many players vying for the lead.

"I didn't really react to anything that was going on out there. And I was surprisingly even calm on 18," said Kerr. "I guess that mental training is paying off."

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.

Bet on NFL Football

Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.

Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.

Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.

Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.

All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.

A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
