Happ returns to Phils to face Rockies

07/25/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Former rookie sensation J.A. Happ takes the mound for the first time since April today, when the Philadelphia Phillies host the Colorado Rockies in the third test of a four-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

On Saturday, Jimmy Rollins finished 3-for-5 with three RBI as Philadelphia sent Ubaldo Jimenez to the showers early in a rousing 10-2 victory. Ryan Howard also knocked in three runs and Raul Ibanez added a two-run homer for the Phillies, who have won three in a row and have scored 16 runs in the first two games of this series.

Kyle Kendrick (6-4) scattered six hits and one run over seven solid innings to post his first win since July 3.

Ian Stewart was 2-for-4 with a solo homer and Carlos Gonzalez knocked in the other run for the Rockies, losers of four straight and eight of their last 10.

Jimenez (15-2) turned in his shortest outing of the year, going two-plus innings and was responsible for three hits and six runs, fanning two and tying a season-worst with six walks.

Happ, who won 12 times in 16 decisions last season for the two-time defending National League champions, opened 2010 with a pair of solid starts in which he allowed nine hits and one unearned run in 10 1/3 innings against Houston and Washington.

However, the runner-up in 2009's Rookie of the Year voting was placed on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a left forearm strain in the April 15 outing. He has made nine subsequent appearances - eight starts - on three minor-league levels while compiling a 1-2 record with a 5.97 earned run average.

Happ is 1-0 in two lifetime meetings with the Rockies, allowing five hits and striking out 11 batters in 11 1/3 scoreless innings.

Colorado goes with Canadian-born lefty Jeff Francis, who won his most recent start and has list just once since early June. Francis allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings in a 10-0 win at Florida on July 20, walking none and striking out seven.

His lone loss over his last eight starts came June 30 at San Diego.

The 29-year-old is 2-2 in five road starts this season and is 1-1 in four lifetime games against the Phillies with a 7.59 ERA in 21 1/3 innings.

Though Colorado and Philadelphia split a two-game series in May, the Phillies have won 13 of the last 16 matchups between the clubs.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
