09/30/2007 - Killenard, Ireland (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Nick Faldo couldn't have hoped for a better end to his first captaincy at the Seve Trophy.
Faldo's Great Britain & Ireland team won seven of the 10 singles matches on Sunday and halved two more to beat Continental Europe for the fourth straight time.
Heading into the final day, the Great Britain & Ireland team trailed by a point. But it picked up eight of the 10 available points in the singles matches to win 16 1/2 - 11 1/2, matching its winning score from two years ago.
"My guys came out today and went on a roll. Simple as that," said Faldo, who will captain the European Ryder Cup team next season.
Seve Ballesteros, the Continental Europe captain and tournament namesake, seemed to take umbrage afterwards at the notion that his tournament was simply a warm-up for the next Ryder Cup.
But he may have simply been reeling from another tough loss. Continental Europe hasn't won the Seve Trophy since its inaugural year in 2000, and this was the second year in a row that it has been beaten badly in the Sunday singles matches.
"Obviously, I'm surprised," said Ballesteros, acting as captain for the fourth time.
The first three matches on Sunday all went Great Britain & Ireland's way.
Colin Montgomerie claimed a 1-up win over Robert Karlsson, Paul Casey eased to a 3 & 2 victory over Raphael Jacquelin, and Marc Warren beat Gregory Havret 1- up.
Soren Hansen missed a chance to get Continental Europe a full point when his opponent, Nick Dougherty, won two holes late in that match to earn a halve.
Graeme Storm picked up a full point for Great Britain & Ireland in the most lopsided match of the day, a 6 & 5 win over the illness-stricken Thomas Bjorn.
Great Britain & Ireland's other wins came from Simon Dyson, who beat Mikko Ilonen 2 & 1; Bradley Dredge, who earned a 2-up victory over Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano; and Justin Rose, who fought off a late charge from Miguel Angel Jimenez for a 2 & 1 triumph in the anchor match.
Continental Europe's only full point was earned by Peter Hanson, who beat Oliver Wilson 1-up in the second-to-last match. Markus Brier got a half-point for the Continental Europeans by tying Phillip Archer.
"I'm delighted with the way the guys have performed," Faldo said of his team. "But I'm equally pleased by everybody from both teams. Every player's had a good week here."
Montgomerie, the winning captain last year, was having a poor week -- three losses in three matches -- before he moved ahead early against Karlsson. The Scotsman was 3-up through just five holes.
"I think the first match made a lot of difference," Ballesteros said. "Robert Karlsson played great, but he didn't make any putts."
Indeed, just about everything was going Great Britain & Ireland's way from the start. Early action at the Heritage Club produced a slew of close approaches and long birdie putts.
In the second match, Casey knocked his approach to tap-in range at the eighth and made birdie to move 3-up on Jacquelin. Also at the eighth, Warren took a 2-up lead on Havret when he chipped to two feet to set up a birdie.
By that time -- and with Rose blowing Jimenez away in the anchor match -- it was clear that Great Britain & Ireland would get the points it needed to win again.
In that last match, Jimenez was 5-down with six holes remaining against Rose before he won three straight holes to save some face. But it was only a personal victory.
"I'm very proud of my team," Ballesteros said. "I think they played very well."
But not nearly well enough on Sunday.

Many fans thought it was the best side in the nation by the end of last season. This year, the polls have built on Georgia's momentum and granted it the No. 1 preseason ranking, followed by Ohio State and USC. (The Associated Press has the Buckeyes at No. 2; USA Today took the Trojans.)
"To have people believing we have one of the best teams in the nation going into this thing, it's exciting for us," Bulldogs coach Mark Richt told the AP. "I don't think anything is guaranteed, but we certainly have put ourselves in position where at least the college football world thinks we're pretty good."
Georgia Bulldogs - 9.5 wins
There's no question they're good, but the Bulldogs have one of the toughest 12-game schedules in the nation, mostly because they play in the powerhouse Southeastern Conference. Away games at No. 15 Arizona State, No. 7 LSU and No. 10 Auburn loom large, with contests between the hedges versus No. 24 Alabama and No. 18 Tennessee as well as the World's Largest Cocktail Party in Jacksonville versus No.5 Florida.
Ohio State Buckeyes - 10 wins
Like the Bulldogs, the Buckeyes also have a number of tough road contests in 2008. After two scrimmages dressed up as real games versus Youngstown State and Ohio, it's off to face USC. Other tough away games include No.13 Wisconsin in October and No. 20 Illinois in November. Granted, it should be pretty easy sledding at the Horseshoe. In fact, the only ranked team that travels to Columbus is No. 22 Penn State, in October.
USC Trojans - 10.5 wins
A similarly light schedule awaits the Trojans of Southern California, which is why the oddsmakers' total is one win more and the over is currently commanding -150 odds. Pete Carroll's troops only play three ranked teams in 2008, and all of those games are at home. After what should be an easy trip to Virginia to start things off on Aug. 30, the Trojans get two weeks to prepare for Ohio State in Los Angeles. Their two other ranked opponents, No. 21 Oregon and No. 15 Arizona State, visit in consecutive weeks to start the month of October. After that, the competition eases up. Of course, this is the same highly-touted school that lost to Stanford in 2007 and Oregon State in 2006. And don't discount the fact that USC plays its biggest rivals, Notre Dame and UCLA, back-to-back to close out the regular season. On paper, the Trojans are far superior, but motivation will be high for the Irish and Bruins, especially if their historic foes are in national-title contention.
Odds to Win the Heisman Trophy
Tim Tebow, Florida - 7/2
He won it last year, so it's no surprise he's the favorite to do it again, making him just the second player to go back-to-back. Ohio State's Archie Griffin turned the trick in 1974 and 1975, and Tebow's coach, Urban Meyer, is pretty sure his star quarterback can match the Buckeyes legend.
"There has never been anyone quite like him," Meyer told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I am very lucky to be his coach."
Chris Wells, Ohio State - 5/1
The man they call "Beanie" was a star recruit out of high school, so it's not like nobody knew who the star tailback was before he rushed for 576 yards as a freshman in 2006 and 1,609 as a sophomore. But perhaps his finest moment came last year versus Michigan when he rumbled for 222 yards and two touchdowns in the Buckeyes' 14-3 victory over the hated Wolverines.
Knowshon Moreno, Georgia - 8/1
If the Bulldogs are to live up to expectations, they'll need a huge effort from their sophomore running back. This might be the last year of college ball for Moreno, who rushed for 1,334 yards and for 14 touchdowns as a freshman, while adding 253 receiving yards on 20 receptions, so expect big things for the man from Belford, N.J.

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)
But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)
Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.
The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.
Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.
Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.
