Gilbert disagrees with Jackson's views, fined $100,000 by NBA

07/12/2010 - Cleveland, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert released a statement on Monday in regards to Jesse Jackson's reaction to his open letter to LeBron James last Thursday.

Hours after James announced his decision to leave Cleveland and sign with the Miami Heat, Gilbert posted an open letter on the Cavaliers' website that called the superstar's hour-long television special announcing his choice a "selfish" and a "cowardly betrayal."

The lengthy rant was seen by Jackson as Gilbert having "a slave master mentality," and said it endangered James and defamed his character.

"I strongly disagree with Rev. Jesse Jackson's recent comments and we are not going to engage in any related discussion on it." Gilbert said Monday. "Going forward, we're very excited about the Cavaliers and the positive future of our region."

Gilbert's actions, however, resulted in a $100,000 fine by the NBA, as per commissioner David Stern on Monday.

Chicago Bears (+350) - The Bears are probably a bit of an overhyped team once again this year.No, we don't think it is plausible for QB Jay Cutler to have as bad of a season as he did last year, and we do think the additions of RB Chester Taylor and DE Julius Peppers are going to help immensely, but there's still something in the water in the Windy City that we aren't so sure about. The questions really lie on defense, where it feels like DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be trying to stop opposing teams all by himself. This year should show some marked improvement in the Motor City.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.

''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
